Kinja'd!!!

Traded my 2015 Dodge Dart GT for a 2018 Subaru Outback 3.6R Touring. I am absolutely in love. I first did a test drive a few weeks ago and I went to 3 different dealers to today and did 3 more test drives and fell more in love with the car each time. I’m definitely going to miss my manual and the fun that the Dart was, but the Subaru is the practicality, size and space that I was looking for.

Buying process was not bad actually. I started with the dealer closest to my apartment and got an initial OTD. Dealer two came within a couple hundred of that price and was going to give me $1000 more for my trade, but the additional fees negated that gain. I went to dealer 3 which was the furthest away, and they came to play ball. They gave me the most for the trade and were a good $16 00 lower than the other dealers. I called up the first dealer to give him the opportunity to counter and he did beating their price by $100. The last dealer beat that by $200 more and the first guy got pissy after I came back that last time and angrily told me he wasn’t going to play auction and that he gave me a fair price and that should have earned my business. Oh well, at the end of the day I want to absolute lowest price I can get and if the last dealer wants to take a bath on that car to get my business, that’s their problem. Other than the driving around to dealers since 10am. The process at the last dealer only took about 2 hrs from the time I walked in to the time we agreed on the end price.

Congrats. I bought a 2018 Outback  Limited 2.5 with Eyesight and nav back in January. I’ve been very happy with that decision and have put 11k miles on it since then. Rides well, hauls everything, goes off-road reasonably well and is suprisingly good to drive on twisty roads. I hope you are as happy with yours as I am with mine.

Congrats on your purchase! I wasn’t considering a Subaru at first but a co-worker of mine has a 2016 2.5 Limited and she absolutely loves it. I was impressed the few times I was in it and added that to the short list of cars I was considering. And with the updates they did with the 2018s, I liked it even more. And I coming from the Dart with the sportier suspension, this rides like a dream and for its size, it actually drives really well. I did so much research on them and instantly knew that was the right vehicle once I test drove it.

T he dumbest thing customers do is ask each dealer for their ‘best price’ and pick one. You did it the right way pi tting them against each other and paid the least, good work.

Nice. I just traded the TSX in yesterday at Midlothian CarMax on an AWD TL. Like you I’m getting used to auto again but I really enjoy the car.

Thanks! I agree. I learned from my first buying experience with the Dart and was going to do better. I just started with them giving me an out the door price, h ere is my trade, and this is the financing term  I want. Once I got all three, then I started letting them bid for my business. It seemed to work well.

I like my Mom's 2017 with the 2.5. I wouldn't personally daily drive one but I would never kick it out of the family.

Yeah I was all the way in your neck of the woods today. I bought mine at Colonial Subaru. They really wanted the business.

How are you liking the TL so far?

Nice!

I’m thrilled after all these years that our metro area of 1.3 million people is finally getting its second Subaru dealer in a few months.

Fact: the last Subie I drove was a nearly-new bugeye WRX.

Oh yeah, they’re still pretty new so I can imagine. The TL has been great other than the TPMS light being on. Not the biggest deal but I still should fix it. It’s phenomenal on back roads...I drove it much harder than expected on Old Gun earlier today and it performed beautifully.

How much off MSRP did you get on this? Something that bothers me about Subaru is that they don’t give a lot of discounts when I put them into TrueCar (which is also USAA).

I’d have to get the paperwork out of the car to give exact figures, but it was around 4500 off MSRP which was below invoice . The total sticker was $40,963 and I walked out the door (prior to my down payment, so this is not what I ended up financing ) for $ 34,900. That was after taxes, tags, title, and $3300 for my trade allowance.

That’s actually decent. Japanese brands, excluding Nissan and Mitsubishi, seem to not give huge discounts, but I’m glad you got a good deal. Meanwhile, a loaded 500X can be had for like $10,000 off, yet there still aren’t many around. I hope you like the Subaru; I just had a bad experience with one at the auto show, but it should work for you, especially all loaded like that!

Thanks! The first sales guy I talked to did say that Subaru doesn’t offer discounts and incentives like the other brands do, and that any discounts are usually just from the dealers.

Outstanding!  I bought a 2015 3.6R Limited at the beginning of June and I love it.  These come with a built in cult, so if you’re into those things, there are some cool mods you can do (lift kits, bumper guards, roof racks).  Eyesight is great for slogging through stop and go traffic.  Enjoy!

I found Colonial Subaru was way better than any of the Richmond dealers on price as well. But I found Sheehy Subaru in Springfield to be the most competitive and then Colonial will often match. But I had to show Colonial the written offer as they didn't believe it was otd.

You have this car buy ing thing down.

There seems to b e 2 types of buyers. Those that want the absolute best price, and those that feel like they got a good deal ( after the salesman pretends to talk to the manager) and c omes back with $500 - 1000 off sticker.

If the discount is just from the dealer, then Subaru is offering some incentive money, but probably objective based. Either that or they expect to make money on financing. No dealer is going to sell a car for an actual loss, unless it’s been on the lot forever and they’re sick of paying interest on it.

Regardless, a few grand off a Subaru sounds like a solid deal. Congrats!
